A Letter to My Daughter

Dear Skylar,

Happy birthday, baby girl! I can’t believe you are a year old today! Time please slow down!

I’ve thought about this letter and what I would say to you for a while now. The truth is, it’s hard to put into words everything I’m feeling. Before you were born, the idea of having a girl scared me. Honestly, the thought of raising a girl revealed some of my deepest insecurities. I didn’t think I was capable of raising you to be strong and confident when I myself often feel as if I don’t measure up. One thing the Lord is teaching me is that He will blesses you with the exact opportunity you need to change your heart and shape your character. I believe the Lord gave me you to help shift my perspective. As I raise you, I know that I will have to trust the Lord.

The last 12 months have been nothing short of amazing. You are my sunshine! You bring so much joy and light to our family. There are so many things I love about being your mom. I love taking care of you. I love seeing your smile when you wake up in the morning. I love holding you as you fall asleep at night. I love how much you love your brother. I love your laugh. You are playful and curious. You are sweet and loving. You are also very independent. Your father and I could see that very early on. I can’t wait to see how your character grows and develops over time and how God uses all the wonderful things he’s placed in you.

This moment is bittersweet. I so excited to be celebrating your first birthday. At the same time, I’m a little sad because this day is a reminder that you are growing up. And growing up means you will gradually become less dependent on me. While I feel some way about that, it’s obviously a good thing. I want you to grow into your own. I want you to discover your purpose. I want you to experience life to the fullest.

This verse hangs in your bedroom:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬

I can’t wait to see how the Lord’s plans unfold for you. I am looking forward to walking alongside you as you discover God’s plan for your life. I will always be your biggest cheerleader. I will listen to you and do my best to understand your perspective. I’m sure there there will be times when we don’t see eye to eye, but I hope you know that I love you no matter what. You are so beautiful, inside and out. I will do everything I can to help you believe that for yourself.

Today we celebrate you baby girl! I can’t wait to see what the years ahead hold for you. I love you so much!

30 Things for Year 30

In one week I will be 30!

I had to pause for a minute to let that sink in. 30 years old. What a milestone.

My life has looked very different from what I imagined it would be when I was younger. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be whereEce I am right now. It’s funny how life works out.

As I think about the year ahead, I’m filled with optimism. I feel like my life is only beginningEv, like I’m just now discovering who I am and stepping into the person I was meant to be.

To celebrate year 30, I created a bucket list with 30 things I would like to accomplish in this next year. Some things I’ve done before. Some I’ve only dreamed of doing. Some I never thought I would ever do. I’m looking forward to stepping out of my comfort zone, having some new experiences, and maximizing this life I have been given.

Cheers to 30 years and many more!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Jaden!

Happy birthday, baby boy!

I can’t believe you are another year older! It still seems like just yesterday that you made your entrance into the world, changing our lives forever.

It’s been amazing watching you grow over the last year. Just think, one year ago you weren’t even walking. Now you’re walking, running, jumping, and climbing. You’re so smart too. I can’t even count the number of words you know. It seems like you learn a new one every day. I love talking to you, watching you learn how to put phrases and sentences together, and observing you as you learn how to process your thoughts and feelings about everything around you.

Some of your current likes and interests include basketball, waffles, applesauce, helping daddy with anything he’s doing, counting, singing songs, dinosaurs, cleaning, and The Boss Baby. It’s fun to watch you enjoy so many different things.

I love your smile. I love your laugh. I love when you make me hold your hand or sit next to you on the couch. Even when I’m busy and trying to get things done, all you really care about is us being together. You remember what’s important and you remind me each time to say, “Mommy, sit down!”

You light up the room when you walk in and bring smiles to the faces of everyone you encounter. You are playful, silly, polite, helpful, compassionate and so much more. I hope those qualities continue to develop in you more and more as you grow up. I’m sure I said most of these things in last year’s letter, but they’re true. And I will keep telling you all the things I love about you so you’ll never forget how unique and special you are.

I looking forward to the next year and watching you continue to grow. It’s such a privilege to be blessed with the opportunity to be your mom. I pray often that the Lord will continue to give your dad and I wisdom as we raise you. I hope you enjoy your day!

I love you so much!

A Letter to My Son

Dear Jaden,

Happy birthday baby boy! I can’t believe you are one year old! Where has the time gone? This year has been one of the best years of my life, all because of you.

I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday. That morning, I had no idea how much my life would change. You entered this world faster than we expected, but you were clearly ready and we were ready to meet you.

When you were placed on my chest, I was amazed by you and what I had just experienced. We had waited so long to see you and now here you were. I loved everything about you. After a few moments you opened your eyes and looked right at me. Our eyes met and something changed in me that moment. To this day I still don’t have words to really explain how I felt. But whenever I think about that moment, my heart almost feels like it could burst from being filled with so much love and happiness. Your birthday was such a great day.

You have brought so much love and joy to my world. I love how your face lights up when I see you in the morning. Your smile makes every sacrifice all worth it. I have loved watching you grow and develop over the last 12 months. You’ve surprised us a few times, like when you started snapping your fingers. What 9 month old just learns how to do that? And when you started crawling. You just came home from daycare one day and started crawling and you haven’t stopped moving since.

I love how we play and laugh together. Your laugh is so infectious. I love how independent you try to be. I noticed that quality in you within the first few months of your life (I think you get that from me). You are also so adventurous and curious and I hope you continue to be curious about the world around you.

You’re so happy and joyous (I think you get that from your dad). I love how you have the ability to make other people happy. It seems like everywhere we go you make the place a little brighter. People gravitate towards you and you are always willing to share a smile or a cute little “hi.” I already see the potential you have to make an impact on others around you. I pray that as you grow up your light will continue to shine and that you will continue to bring smiles to the faces of those you encounter.

I pray each day that the Lord will keep you and protect you because I know that your dad and I can only do so much. I hope that we can be good examples for you and guide you towards the Lord. I pray that you will come to know Him as your savior and that His will be done in your life. I know that He has a great plan for you.

I read these words this week in a devotional and this expresses the exact truths I hope you learn and live by:

“God loves you. He pours out extravagant grace to you every single day. God created you in His own image. You are His beloved child and He has incredible plans in store for your future. God wants the very best for you and His vision for your life will always be immeasurably more than you could ever ask, dream or imagine.”

Jaden, I look forward to watching you grow over the years and celebrating many more birthdays! I want you to know that I will always be by your side, cheering you on. And know that no matter how old you get you will always be my baby.

Mama loves you so much!
